Chapter 7 - Rosie’s examination

The emergency department documented:
Bruised cheek.
Several pressure bruises on both upper arms.
Minor redness around one wrist.
No fracture.
No concussion.
No internal injury.
No burn injury.
No evidence of sexual abuse.
I say that because rumors later became grotesque.
The actual findings were serious enough without inventing more.
A child-abuse pediatrician asked Rosie questions carefully.
Not:
“Did Aunt Bethany hit you?”
Instead:
“Tell me what happened.”
Rosie said:
“I saw Aunt Bethany put Mommy money in bag.”
Then:
“She said say I saw nothing.”
The doctor looked at me.
“What is Mommy money?”
May you like
I did not know.
Rosie’s mother, Anna, had been dead for two years.
