Chapter 1 - The Kennel Door

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

The rope tightened around Lily Parker’s collar as she planted both sneakers into the grass.

“Please stop! I’m scared!”

Her grandmother kept pulling.

Diane Parker was sixty-one, perfectly dressed, perfectly composed—and completely unmoved by the terrified child fighting to stay away from the open dog kennel.

“You should have listened the first time.”

Lily cried harder.

“I didn’t do anything!”

Diane dragged her the last few feet, pushed her through the wire opening, then slammed the kennel door.

CLICK.

The padlock closed.

“You deserve to be locked in here.”

Lily backed against the wire wall.

Then the patio door crashed open.

Daniel Parker stepped outside.

He had come home twenty minutes earlier than expected.

That small change in schedule would eventually save his daughter.

At first, Daniel didn’t understand what he was seeing.

His mother.

A rope.

His nine-year-old daughter behind the bars of a dog kennel.

Then Lily looked at him.

“Daddy!”

Daniel ran.

“STAY AWAY FROM MY DAUGHTER!”

Diane stepped in front of the kennel.

“You need to calm down.”

Daniel shoved past her when she tried to block him. She lost her balance and dropped onto the grass.

He grabbed the bolt cutters hanging beside the shed.

One snap.

The padlock fell.

Daniel ripped open the kennel door.

Lily launched herself into his arms.

“I’ve got you.”

She was sobbing so hard she could barely breathe.

“I’ve got you, baby.”

Diane pushed herself upright.

“You are teaching her that consequences don’t matter.”

Daniel stared at his mother.

“You locked my child in a dog kennel.”

“She was having another tantrum.”

Lily suddenly whispered against Daniel’s shoulder.

“No, I wasn’t.”

Daniel looked at her.

Diane moved forward.

“Don’t listen to her.”

“Stop.”

Daniel stepped between them.

Diane reached for Lily anyway.

Her phone slipped from her hand.

It hit the grass.

The screen lit up.

A video was playing.

Daniel looked down.

And the entire world seemed to stop.

The video showed Lily sitting inside the same kennel three days earlier.

Diane stood outside.

A wooden stick was in her hand.

Daniel picked up the phone.

His voice became frighteningly quiet.

“When did you start doing this?”

Diane’s face changed instantly.

She lunged.

“Give me my phone!”

Daniel stepped away.

That was when he saw the folder.

Twenty-three videos.

Then another folder.

Its title made his stomach turn.

DANIEL — CUSTODY EVIDENCE.

Lily clung tighter to him.

Diane stopped trying to grab the phone.

Now she simply stared.

Because Daniel had just found something she had never intended him to see.
