Chapter 4 - The Script

“No.”
Daniel shook his head.
“Lily would never say that.”
Melissa’s expression remained gentle.
“She didn’t want to.”
Daniel looked toward the closed guest-room door.
“Then why practice it?”
“Because Diane told her it was a game.”
Diane stood.
“That child is being manipulated.”
Melissa turned.
“She described the wording.”
Silence.
Melissa opened her notebook.
“She was told to say, ‘My daddy gets angry and hurts people.’”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“She was also told to say, ‘I’m scared to go home with him.’”
Diane laughed sharply.
“This is outrageous.”
Lily appeared in the doorway.
Her face was wet.
“You made me say it.”
Everyone turned.
Diane’s expression hardened.
“Go back inside.”
Daniel stepped between them.
“No.”
Lily clutched his shirt.
Diane looked at her granddaughter.
“You don’t understand what you’re doing.”
Daniel’s voice dropped.
“Don’t talk to her.”
“You are poisoning her against me.”
“You locked her in a cage.”
“It was discipline!”
The police officer looked at Diane.
“Ma’am, I strongly recommend you stop speaking.”
Rachel almost smiled.
Diane did not.
Daniel’s house repairs were almost finished.
He had planned to take Lily home the following week.
He had told Diane that six days earlier.
Now the timeline made sense.
The behavior reports intensified immediately afterward.
Two school pickups Daniel didn’t authorize.
Three supposed tantrums.
A sudden guardianship petition.
The kennel.
Rachel asked Daniel to open his email.
“Search your mother’s name.”
He did.
Most messages were ordinary.
Then one appeared from Lily’s elementary school.
SUBJECT: EARLY DISMISSAL CONFIRMATION.
Daniel opened it.
The school had released Lily to Diane the previous Tuesday at 12:40 p.m.
Daniel stared.
“I didn’t approve this.”
Another email.
Thursday.
Another early release.
Monday.
Four pickups in two weeks.
Rachel asked, “Where did she say Lily was?”
“At school.”
Lily whispered, “Grandma told me you knew.”
Daniel looked at her.
“Where did she take you?”
Lily pointed toward the backyard.
Sometimes the kennel.
Sometimes the shed.
Sometimes the basement den.
Daniel felt sick.
A responding officer contacted the school.
Twenty minutes later, the principal called.
They had authorization forms.
Signed by Daniel Parker.
Except Daniel had never signed them.
Rachel looked at the guardianship papers.
Then the forged school releases.
“This wasn’t impulsive.”
“No.”
“She was building a file.”
Daniel looked through the window at the kennel.
Then he noticed something beside it.
A small security camera mounted under the patio roof.
He had installed it when they moved in.
The indicator light was off.
“Why isn’t that recording?”
Diane didn’t answer.
Daniel opened the home-security app.
Camera unavailable.
He checked the device history.
It had been manually disabled seventeen times in the previous six weeks.
Every shutdown occurred while Diane was alone with Lily.
But the account required an administrator password.
Only two people had it.
Daniel.
And his mother.

👉 Diane had carefully erased the backyard camera whenever she punished Lily—but she hadn’t realized the security system kept a record every time she turned it off.
