Chapter 9 - The Blue Folder

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Police searched Diane’s home office with her consent at first.

Then she withdrew consent.

By then, officers had already seen enough to obtain a warrant.

The blue folder from Lily’s drawing was found in a locked filing cabinet.

Rachel and Daniel received copies of its contents through the legal process.

Page one:

DANIEL PARKER — PARENTAL FITNESS.

Page two:

Recommended incidents to document.

Raised voice.

Physical confrontation.

Emotional instability.

Child expressing fear.

Daniel felt physically ill.

There were calendars.

Notes.

Scripts.

Descriptions of his work schedule.

Even Claire’s obituary.

Diane had underlined one sentence about Daniel being “devastated by the loss.”

She intended to transform grief into evidence of instability.

But the most disturbing page concerned Lily.

TARGET DISCLOSURE LANGUAGE.

“I don’t feel safe.”

“Daddy gets angry.”

“I want to stay with Grandma.”

Lily had been rehearsing those sentences.

Against her will.

Daniel closed the folder.

“I can’t read this.”

Rachel nodded.

“You don’t need to read all of it.”

“I should.”

“No.”

She pulled it away.

“You need to be Lily’s father. Let me be your lawyer.”

That stopped him.

For two days, Daniel had treated every piece of evidence like something he personally had to defeat.

But Lily didn’t need an investigator.

She needed breakfast.

A familiar bedtime story.

Someone who could sit through an entire cartoon without checking his phone.

So Daniel did that.

He took Lily to the temporary rental Rachel helped arrange.

They ate pancakes.

With ketchup.

Daniel hated every second of it.

Lily loved them.

That evening, she asked a question.

“Is Grandma going to jail?”

Daniel didn’t know how to answer.

“Some adults are deciding what happens.”

“Do you hate her?”

Daniel looked at his daughter.

He could have lied.

Instead, he said, “I’m very angry with her.”

“That’s not what I asked.”

Nine years old.

Claire’s daughter.

Too smart.

Daniel sighed.

“I don’t know what I feel yet.”

Lily nodded.

Then whispered, “I still love her.”

Daniel’s heart broke all over again.

“You’re allowed to.”

“Even if she was mean?”

“You don’t have to stop loving someone to know they shouldn’t be allowed to hurt you.”

Lily thought about that.

Then leaned against him.

The next morning, Rachel called.

“There’s more.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“What now?”

“The bank statements.”

Diane had transferred money from Lily’s account into three businesses.

One belonged to Diane.

One belonged to Patricia Lane.

The third was unfamiliar.

HARBOR RIDGE HOLDINGS.

More than $190,000 had moved through it.

Rachel traced the ownership.

Then she called Daniel again.

“Sit down.”

“I’m sitting.”

“Harbor Ridge belongs to your mother’s boyfriend.”

Daniel went silent.

“What boyfriend?”

Rachel hesitated.

“A man named Edward Shaw.”

Daniel knew the name.

Everyone in the Parker family did.

Edward had been Claire’s father’s financial adviser.

The same man who helped establish Lily’s account.

👉 The money trail had just connected Diane’s custody scheme to the very person who knew exactly how Lily’s inheritance was supposed to be protected.
