Chapter 15 - “Why Wasn’t I Enough?”

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Daniel met Diane in a monitored interview room.

No Lily.

That was non-negotiable.

Diane sat behind the table.

No jewelry.

No perfect hair.

No authority.

Just his mother.

For several seconds, Daniel said nothing.

Diane finally spoke.

“You look tired.”

He almost laughed.

“You locked my daughter in a kennel.”

Her face tightened.

“I know.”

“No. You know you were caught.”

“That isn’t fair.”

Daniel stared at her.

“Fair?”

She looked down.

“I didn’t mean for it to go that far.”

“You put a rope on a child.”

“I needed you to react.”

“You terrified Lily so I would hit you.”

“I thought if the court gave me temporary custody—”

“You thought you could hide the money.”

Diane’s eyes filled.

“I was going to replace it.”

“With what?”

Silence.

Daniel leaned back.

“Edward?”

She said nothing.

“You thought he loved you.”

Her face changed.

That was the wound.

Edward had convinced Diane they were building a life together.

Lake house.

Travel.

Money.

A fresh start.

Then Daniel threatened the audit.

Edward panicked.

According to Diane, he told her everything would collapse unless she kept control of Lily’s account.

She believed him.

Or chose to.

Daniel didn’t know which was worse.

“Why Lily?”

Diane whispered, “It wasn’t supposed to hurt her.”

“She begged you.”

“I know.”

“You did it anyway.”

Tears rolled down Diane’s cheeks.

Daniel felt nothing comforting.

That scared him.

She looked at him.

“When Claire came along, you stopped needing me.”

Daniel blinked.

There it was.

Not money.

Not Edward.

Something older.

Diane continued.

“You had your own family.”

“That’s what children do.”

“I know.”

“No. You don’t.”

His voice remained calm.

“You treated my marriage like someone stole me.”

Diane began crying harder.

“After your father left, you were all I had.”

“I was twelve.”

She looked up.

“You were my reason to keep going.”

“I was your son.”

Daniel leaned forward.

“Not your husband. Not your therapist. Not your property.”

Diane flinched.

He had never spoken to her that way.

Maybe he should have years ago.

She whispered—

“Why wasn’t I enough?”

Daniel finally understood.

Every girlfriend she disliked.

Every decision she questioned.

Claire.

Lily.

Anyone who proved Daniel could love someone without Diane controlling that love.

“You were my mother.”

His voice softened.

“That should have been enough.”

Diane covered her face.

For one moment, Daniel grieved the woman he wished she had been.

Then he remembered Lily saying:

I stopped counting.

Compassion did not require access.

Understanding did not require forgiveness.

Love did not require surrender.

Daniel stood.

“Are you going to cooperate with prosecutors?”

Diane wiped her face.

“Yes.”

“Then tell the truth.”

“Will Lily ever see me again?”

Daniel looked at her.

“That won’t be your decision.”

He walked toward the door.

“Daniel.”

He stopped.

“I do love her.”

He turned.

“Then for once, love her enough to accept what protects her from you.”

Diane broke down.

Daniel left.

Outside, Rachel was waiting.

She handed him a document.

The bank’s final forensic accounting.

Recovered assets.

Frozen accounts.

Property liens.

Insurance.

Most of Lily’s missing money could be restored.

Not all.

But nearly all.

Daniel looked at the number.

Then Rachel pointed to another page.

“There’s something else.”

Claire’s original agreement contained a clause nobody had noticed.

If fraud by a custodian occurred, control transferred immediately to an independent trust company.

Diane could never touch the account again.

Neither could Daniel.

He smiled.

“Claire.”

Rachel nodded.

“Claire.”
