Chapter 11 - The Four Minutes Before

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

The courtroom went silent.

The full video began.

Diane appeared in frame.

The kennel door stood open behind her.

Patricia Lane’s voice came from off-camera.

“If he comes through the patio door, keep the camera running.”

Diane nodded.

“He’ll see Lily. He’ll lose his mind.”

Several people in the courtroom shifted.

Daniel watched the judge.

Her expression changed slightly.

Then Patricia asked:

“What if he doesn’t touch you?”

Diane smiled on screen.

“He will.”

A pause.

Then—

“All I need is one hit. Then the guardianship is mine.”

Diane’s attorney closed his eyes.

The judge looked directly at her.

The video continued.

“Not compared to what happens if Daniel audits the account.”

Then Lily’s voice.

Small.

Frightened.

“Grandma, please don’t.”

Daniel’s fists tightened beneath the table.

Rachel placed one hand near his.

Not touching.

Just reminding him.

Stay calm.

The next section showed Diane looping the lead around Lily’s collar area and pulling her toward the kennel.

The courtroom became completely still.

Lily begged her to stop.

Diane locked the door.

Then Daniel appeared.

But now everyone had context.

His horror.

His urgency.

The fact that Diane deliberately stepped between him and a locked child.

The judge watched Daniel move her aside.

Watched him cut the padlock.

Watched Lily run into his arms.

Then the edited portion ended.

Nobody spoke for several seconds.

Finally, the judge removed her glasses.

“Counsel.”

Diane’s lawyer stood.

He looked as though he would rather disappear.

“Your Honor—”

“Did your client provide you with the full recording?”

A pause.

“No.”

Diane snapped toward him.

The judge noticed.

Rachel then presented the guardianship filing timestamp.

10:14 a.m.

The backyard incident happened after 3:00 p.m.

Diane had filed for emergency custody hours before the event she later claimed proved Daniel was dangerous.

Then came the school releases.

The security-camera shutdown records.

Lily’s notebook.

The scripts.

The financial-account freeze.

By the time Rachel finished, Diane looked ten years older.

The judge spoke carefully.

“The emergency petition is denied.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

His entire body shook with relief.

But the judge wasn’t finished.

“Pending further investigation, Mrs. Parker is to have no unsupervised contact with the child.”

Lily was safe.

Legally.

Clearly.

Immediately.

Daniel looked toward Diane.

He expected anger.

Instead, she looked terrified.

Not about Lily.

About something else.

Her attorney whispered into her ear.

Diane suddenly stood.

“I need to leave.”

The judge frowned.

“You will sit down.”

“My attorney needs—”

“Sit.”

Diane slowly lowered herself.

Rachel’s phone buzzed.

She read the message.

Then looked at Daniel.

“Edward Shaw was arrested this morning.”

Daniel’s relief vanished.

“For what?”

Rachel turned the phone toward him.

One line.

FINANCIAL FRAUD INVESTIGATION EXPANDS.

Then a second message arrived.

Police had searched Edward’s lake house.

They found financial records.

And a sealed envelope with Claire Parker’s name written across the front.
