Chapter 7 - The Video Daniel Feared Most

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

At 8:12 the next morning, Detective Marissa Cole called.

“We got into the phone.”

Daniel sat upright in the hotel chair.

Lily was still asleep.

Rachel had booked them adjoining rooms.

“What did you find?”

“A lot.”

His stomach tightened.

“Is Lily okay in the videos?”

“Nothing graphic.”

Daniel exhaled.

“But Daniel…”

“What?”

“There are recordings of you.”

His body went cold.

“How many?”

“Fourteen.”

He looked toward Lily.

“What am I doing?”

“Arguing with your mother.”

Daniel remembered several arguments.

Diane criticizing his parenting.

Diane telling Lily she ate too slowly.

Diane refusing to let Daniel take Lily home early from a family dinner.

None had seemed important.

Now each one had apparently been recorded.

“Anything bad?”

Cole paused.

“There’s one from yesterday.”

The rescue.

Daniel closed his eyes.

Of course.

Diane’s phone had been positioned on a patio table.

Camera facing the yard.

She had recorded everything.

The dragging.

The kennel.

Daniel rushing out.

Daniel knocking Diane aside.

And afterward, when Diane reached toward Lily, Daniel had struck her hand away.

From one angle, it could look ugly.

He knew what Diane would do with it.

“She wanted me to hit her.”

Cole didn’t answer immediately.

“We’re investigating that possibility.”

Daniel remembered Diane standing between him and the kennel.

Not fleeing.

Not apologizing.

Provoking.

Even after he opened it.

She kept approaching.

“You think she set it up?”

“I think you should let the evidence tell us.”

Daniel hated that answer because it was the responsible one.

Two hours later, Diane’s attorney made his first move.

Rachel received an email.

Diane intended to proceed with the emergency guardianship hearing.

Attached was a thirty-second video clip.

It began after Lily was already locked inside.

It showed Daniel charging across the yard.

Diane stepped toward him.

Daniel knocked her down.

The clip ended.

No rope.

No Lily begging.

No kennel being locked.

No context.

Rachel stared at the screen.

“There it is.”

“She edited it.”

“Obviously.”

“But a judge could see the whole thing.”

“Yes.”

Daniel looked at her.

“Then why is she still going forward?”

Rachel’s expression darkened.

“Because she thinks the full video hurts you too.”

Daniel stared at the wall.

Maybe it did.

He had been furious.

He had moved fast.

He had physically pushed Diane aside.

Would a stranger understand?

A judge who had never seen Lily?

A judge who knew only paperwork?

Rachel leaned forward.

“This is why we don’t panic.”

“My mother locked my daughter in a dog cage and filmed me rescuing her so she could call me dangerous.”

“Yes.”

“How exactly do I not panic?”

“By understanding what she wants.”

Daniel went still.

Rachel pointed at the edited video.

“She wants you angry.”

Daniel looked at it again.

That had been Diane’s plan all along.

Create chaos.

Provoke him.

Record his reaction.

Call the reaction proof.

Then his phone rang.

Detective Cole.

“We recovered a deleted clip.”

Daniel put her on speaker.

“What clip?”

“It was recorded about four minutes before you came outside.”

Daniel’s hand tightened around the phone.

Cole continued.

“Your mother is alone in frame.”

“What is she doing?”

“Talking.”

“To Lily?”

“No.”

Cole paused.

“She’s talking to the camera.”

May you like

👉 Diane had deleted the four minutes before Daniel’s arrival—and whatever she said during those four minutes was important enough that she believed nobody could ever be allowed to hear it.
