Chapter 10 - The Man Who Knew the Account

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Edward Shaw was sixty-five.

Polished.

Soft-spoken.

Trusted.

For fifteen years, he had handled financial planning for Claire’s parents.

After Claire’s father died, Edward stayed involved long enough to help transfer Lily’s custodial assets.

Daniel had not spoken to him in years.

Diane apparently had.

Often.

Detective Cole recovered 417 messages between them.

Most were ordinary.

Dinner plans.

Travel.

Complaints about Daniel.

Then the messages changed.

EDWARD:

He’s asking about professional management.

DIANE:

I can stop it.

EDWARD:

Once they review statements, we have a problem.

DIANE:

Then he can’t remain custodian.

EDWARD:

Guardianship would help.

Daniel read that message three times.

“So they were together?”

Rachel nodded.

“For at least a year.”

Daniel laughed once.

There was no humor in it.

“She hid a boyfriend from me while stealing my daughter’s money with him.”

“Allegedly.”

Daniel looked at her.

“Lawyers really know how to ruin a sentence.”

Rachel almost smiled.

Edward had helped Diane move money under labels such as:

Educational consulting.

Child development services.

Temporary housing expenses.

None matched Lily’s actual expenses.

Daniel had paid Lily’s school tuition himself.

Her medical bills himself.

Her clothing.

Food.

Everything.

The account had barely been touched legitimately.

Which meant most of the missing money had gone somewhere else.

Detective Cole found part of it.

A luxury travel club.

Renovations to Edward’s lake property.

Credit-card debts.

Patricia Lane’s consulting fees.

Diane had not merely panicked about an accounting.

An accounting would expose possible criminal misuse.

The guardianship petition was protection.

If Diane became Lily’s legal guardian, she could claim greater authority over past and future spending.

Not enough to make theft legal.

But enough, she apparently believed, to create confusion.

Delay.

Control.

Rachel met Daniel outside the courthouse the next morning.

The emergency hearing was still going forward.

“How?”

Daniel asked.

“Because Diane has a right to present her petition.”

“After all this?”

“The judge has not seen all this.”

“Why not?”

“She will today.”

Inside, Diane sat beside two attorneys.

No Patricia.

No Edward.

Daniel noticed.

“Where are they?”

Rachel whispered, “Edward has counsel.”

“And Patricia?”

“Not answering calls.”

The judge entered.

Everyone stood.

For the first thirty minutes, Diane’s lawyer painted a careful picture.

Daniel worked long hours.

He had struggled after Claire’s death.

He had argued with his mother.

Then came the edited video.

Daniel watched himself rush across the yard.

He watched Diane fall.

He heard gasps from two observers in the gallery.

Diane looked toward him.

For half a second, triumph returned to her face.

Then her attorney said—

“Mrs. Parker feared for her safety.”

Rachel stood.

“Your Honor, we request that the entire recording be played.”

Diane’s smile disappeared.

Her attorney objected.

Rachel responded calmly.

“The petitioner submitted a selectively edited excerpt from a recording she herself created.”

The judge looked toward Diane.

Then toward the screen.

“Play the full file.”

Daniel looked at his mother.

She was no longer smiling.
