Chapter 12 - Claire’s Envelope

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Daniel had not seen Claire’s handwriting in two years.

He recognized it instantly.

The slight tilt.

The round C.

The way she always pressed too hard with a pen.

Detective Cole placed the sealed envelope on the table.

“Evidence processing photographed everything before we opened it.”

Daniel nodded.

His throat tightened.

“Why did Edward have this?”

“We’re hoping the contents help answer that.”

Inside were six pages.

A copy of the original custodial agreement.

A handwritten letter.

And a flash drive.

The letter was addressed to Daniel.

Danny,

If you’re reading this because something happened to me, I’m sorry.

Daniel stopped.

He couldn’t continue.

Rachel offered to read.

He shook his head.

He tried again.

I know you hate paperwork, so I’m writing the part that matters.

Lily’s money belongs to Lily.

Not you.

Not me.

Not either side of the family.

Protect it until she is old enough to protect it herself.

Daniel smiled through tears.

That was Claire.

Direct.

Practical.

Then came the sentence that changed the room.

Edward suggested we add your mother as permanent replacement custodian.

I said no.

Daniel stared.

He looked at Detective Cole.

“Then how was Diane listed?”

Cole didn’t answer yet.

Daniel kept reading.

I don’t dislike Diane, but she confuses helping with controlling. If something happens to both of us, I want an independent fiduciary managing Lily’s money. Family can love her. Professionals can manage the account.

Daniel closed his eyes.

Claire had seen Diane clearly.

Long before he did.

The flash drive contained scanned emails.

One from Claire to Edward.

Please remove Diane Parker from the draft.

Another:

Do not send anything for signature until the correction is made.

Then a signed final custodial agreement.

The replacement custodian was not Diane.

It was First Commonwealth Trust.

Rachel whispered, “Oh my God.”

Daniel looked at her.

“What?”

“She was never supposed to have control.”

Detective Cole nodded.

“The document currently on file lists Diane.”

Daniel stared.

“So what happened?”

Cole placed two versions side by side.

Claire’s final signed copy.

The version Edward submitted after Claire’s death.

The pages were nearly identical.

Except page nine.

Replacement custodian.

Changed.

Diane Parker.

Daniel felt cold.

“They altered it.”

“That’s what investigators are examining.”

“After Claire died?”

“It appears the altered version was filed six weeks later.”

Daniel looked at the envelope.

“Why keep the original?”

Rachel answered.

“Insurance.”

Against Diane?

Against Edward?

Against each other?

Daniel didn’t know.

Then Detective Cole opened another recovered message.

It was from Diane to Edward eight months earlier.

DIANE:

Claire almost caught you once.

EDWARD:

And I saved you once.

DIANE:

We both saved each other.

EDWARD:

Then don’t get sentimental now.

Daniel slowly sat down.

The theft had not begun six weeks ago.

It had not begun when he mentioned the audit.

It had begun after Claire died.

Possibly while Daniel was too broken to notice anything.

👉 Diane hadn’t simply stolen from Lily’s account—investigators now believed she and Edward had altered the very document Claire created to keep Diane away from it.
