Chapter 6 - Lily’s Money

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Claire’s father had created the account when Lily was born.

College.

Housing.

Medical needs.

A future Claire wanted protected even if something happened to her.

When Claire died, the paperwork became complicated.

Daniel was Lily’s legal parent.

But Diane had already been listed as a secondary custodian years earlier because she worked in banking at the time.

Daniel had never worried about it.

Why would he?

She was his mother.

Rachel asked the obvious question.

“When did you last review the account?”

Daniel felt embarrassed.

Diane jumped in.

“He trusted me because I handled it responsibly.”

Rachel looked at her.

“Then you won’t object to an accounting.”

Diane’s face hardened.

“That is private family property.”

“No,” Rachel replied.

“It’s Lily’s property.”

That distinction seemed to infuriate Diane.

Daniel logged into the account from his laptop.

Password rejected.

He tried again.

Rejected.

He requested a reset.

The recovery email was not his.

It had been changed four months earlier.

To Diane’s email.

Daniel looked at her.

“What did you do?”

“Nothing illegal.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

“I managed it.”

“How much is left?”

Diane crossed her arms.

“Enough.”

Rachel’s voice became cold.

“That is also not an answer.”

The police could not resolve financial questions in the living room.

But Rachel immediately contacted the institution’s fraud department.

The account was frozen pending review.

Diane lost her composure.

“You cannot freeze that account!”

Daniel stared at her.

“Why not?”

“I have bills scheduled.”

“For Lily?”

Silence.

Daniel’s stomach dropped.

“What bills?”

Diane turned away.

The fraud representative would not give full details over the phone, but she confirmed multiple recent transfers.

Several were large.

Daniel asked for the current balance.

There was a pause.

Then the representative gave him a number.

$482,613.

Daniel stopped breathing.

The account should have contained more than $700,000.

Rachel immediately asked for statements.

Diane began pacing.

“You don’t understand investments.”

“Did you take Lily’s money?”

“No.”

“Then where is it?”

“I moved funds.”

“Where?”

“For her benefit.”

“Where?”

Diane screamed—

“I SAID I HANDLED IT!”

Lily jumped.

Daniel instantly moved between them.

“Enough.”

Diane realized what she had done.

Her voice softened.

“Daniel.”

He looked at her differently now.

The mother he remembered seemed farther away with every minute.

“You knew I was asking the bank to transfer custodianship.”

Diane said nothing.

Daniel remembered the conversation.

Six weeks earlier.

He had casually told her he wanted all of Lily’s finances consolidated under one professional trust manager.

Diane had smiled.

“Of course.”

Three days later, Lily’s “behavior problems” supposedly began.

Rachel understood at the same moment.

“She needed legal control before you reviewed the account.”

Daniel looked at the guardianship petition.

Diane hadn’t suddenly decided he was an unfit father.

She had needed a judge to believe it.

Then Daniel remembered the folder on Diane’s phone.

DANIEL — CUSTODY EVIDENCE.

The phone was now at the police station.

Charging.

Waiting.

And somewhere inside it might be the proof of exactly how Diane planned to steal both his daughter and her future.

👉 Diane could explain the kennel as “discipline” and the money as “management”—but she still had no explanation for why she had been secretly building a case against Daniel before he ever knew there was a fight.
