Chapter 11 - The original recording
Digital analysis confirmed what my ears already knew.
The short file:
I choose my family.
had been exported from a longer recording.
The voice was mine.
No AI.
No synthetic voice.
No mysterious technology.
Editing timestamps showed the shortened file was created on Veronica’s laptop three years earlier.
The source recording came from her digital voice recorder.
Why was she recording the conversation?
She was present.
That evening my father Charles, Veronica, and I were discussing whether I should take temporary leave from Vaughn Meridian while Elena underwent treatment.
Veronica was there because she handled communications around several major investors and needed to know whether I would disappear from public view for six weeks.
She asked permission to record notes.
I said yes.
The conversation became heated.
Charles said:
“You cannot blow up a refinancing because Elena cannot sleep.”
I told him:
“If my father thinks the company comes before Elena and Sofia, he can replace me.”
Then:
“I choose my family. Elena and our daughter are my family, and if Vaughn Meridian can’t survive me taking six weeks away, then it deserves a different CEO.”
Veronica later extracted:
“I choose my family.”
Why did Elena believe that meant the Vaughns?
Because Veronica paired it with Charles’s words.
She told Elena:
“Alexander chose the family business and Sofia’s stability. He said he can’t keep letting your illness destabilize them.”
The lie worked because my father had actually been cruel.
Charles gave Veronica enough material.
She changed who I was standing against.
My father felt sick when he heard the full story.
He said:
“I helped her.”
“Yes.”
“I didn’t know.”
“No.”
Then:
“I treated Elena like a risk.”
“Yes.”
He looked at me.
“You agreed with me sometimes.”
There.
“I did.”
Specific again.
Veronica exploited our family culture.
She did not invent it.
That made reform harder.
