Chapter 13 - What happened to Elena’s phone
People kept asking why Elena did not simply call me from another number.
She did.
Twice.
The first attempt came nine months after she left.
My personal number had changed after a credible kidnapping threat against a Vaughn Meridian executive.
Only family and selected contacts received the new number.
Elena called the old one.
Disconnected.
She called my office.
Executive reception transferred her to:
family communications.
Who handled those communications?
Veronica’s consulting office.
An assistant answered.
Elena gave her name.
The assistant had an instruction:
All communications from Elena Vaughn should route to Ms. Hayes due ongoing private family matter.
The assistant transferred.
Veronica answered.
Elena hung up.
Why?
Because by then she believed Veronica was my partner.
That was another manipulation.
Veronica told Elena we had become romantically involved eight months after she left.
We had not.
Our relationship became romantic nearly twenty months after Elena disappeared.
That difference mattered.
Veronica accelerated the timeline to make Elena feel replaced.
Elena tried again a year later from a blocked number.
My office security system rejected anonymous calls at the executive level.
She did not leave voicemail.
Could she have hired a lawyer?
Yes.
She almost did.
She met with one.
The lawyer told her:
“If you want contact with your child, stop relying on letters and pursue a formal parenting petition.”
Elena left the office without retaining him.
Why?
Fear.
Shame.
And one fact.
She believed I had not answered twenty delivered letters.
Her lawyer said:
“That may indicate he intends to fight.”
Elena was afraid a court would examine her postpartum records.
Legally, a treated past condition alone would not erase motherhood.
Emotionally, she believed my wealth would make it decisive.
Veronica never needed to forge a judge.
She only needed Elena to overestimate what my power could do.
