Chapter 9 - Veronica leaves the mansion

Veronica did not spend the night.
Police did not arrest her immediately.
The child incident involved:
A shove witnessed by me.
A threat.
Potential repeated degrading punishment.
No serious injury.
Investigators documented.
Child services barred unsupervised contact pending review.
The letters and audio manipulation required forensic work.
So Veronica left voluntarily with counsel.
Not with twenty suitcases.
One overnight bag.
A later supervised property retrieval handled the rest.
Before she left, she tried one final argument.
“You are treating Elena like a reliable narrator after years of psychiatric instability.”
I looked at her.
“Do not use her diagnosis that way.”
“She disappeared.”
“She sent letters.”
“You don’t know what happened.”
“I know you had them.”
Her face tightened.
Then:
“I protected Sofia while Elena chose herself.”
That sentence became central.
Not:
I did nothing.
Not:
The letters are fake.
She believed she had earned motherhood through presence.
Elena’s illness became disqualification.
I said:
“You are not Sofia’s mother.”
Veronica flinched.
Same truth from another story? But here source says stepmother. Still valid.
She answered:
“I raised her.”
“No. You lived with her for fourteen months.”
“I was there every day.”
“Yes.”
“And Elena?”
I stepped closer.
Not threatening.
“Stop using the distance you helped create as evidence against the person you created distance from.”
Silence.
That was the argument she could not answer.
Later I learned Veronica went to a hotel.
Then her sister’s apartment.
She retained a criminal-defense attorney and family-law counsel despite having no legal parental rights.
Why family-law counsel?
Because she had been engaged to me and wanted to prevent me from:
“mischaracterizing her caregiving.”
Image.
Again.
Veronica was still thinking about the role.
May you like
The family had already changed.
