Chapter 22 - Elena and I are still married

That fact became awkward publicly.

Headlines called Veronica my:

fiancée.

Elena my:

missing wife.

People asked whether Elena and I would:

“reunite.”

As if three years could be deleted because the villain had been identified.

No.

The pending dissolution petition was withdrawn immediately.

Not because our marriage was repaired.

Because its factual basis had been corrupted.

Elena and I began therapy.

Not couples therapy at first.

Structured communication sessions.

We had to learn who we were.

She had believed I rejected her.

I had believed she rejected Sofia and me.

Both of us had built years of emotion around false premises.

Discovering the premise was false did not automatically erase the emotion.

Elena was angry that I eventually loved Veronica.

I was angry Elena never filed for Sofia.

She was ashamed of that.

I regretted saying it cruelly once.

“You had thirty-four stamps but not one court petition.”

Her face went white.

I apologized before the session ended.

The point itself contained truth.

The delivery was punishment.

Elena replied later:

“And you had investigators, lawyers, a private plane, and three years.”

There.

Also true.

We stopped comparing tools.

Instead:

What did you believe then?

What do you know now?

What do you want next?

For six months, the answer to the third question was:

I don’t know.

That was allowed.

I moved to a guest suite when Elena began staying overnight with Sofia.

Not because Elena demanded it.

Because sharing a marital bedroom immediately felt dishonest.

We became two parents inside one house.

Then slowly something else.

May you like

No promises.
