Chapter 6 - The letters begin

Elena did not write thirty-four letters immediately.

For the first year, she wrote none.

That fact hurt.

It also made sense.

She believed:

I had chosen my family dynasty over her.

I had accepted her departure.

I was protecting Sofia from her.

She felt ashamed.

Angry.

Then she stabilized.

Her therapist challenged her.

“What direct evidence do you have that Alexander does not want contact?”

Elena listed:

The recording.

The email.

The investigator.

Her therapist asked:

“What came directly from Alexander without an intermediary?”

Silence.

That question planted something.

Fourteen months after leaving, Elena wrote the first letter.

Not romantic.

Alexander,

I’m doing better. I want to discuss Sofia directly, without your father, Veronica, or family lawyers. If you do not want that, please tell me yourself.

She mailed it by certified mail to the mansion.

Delivery confirmed.

I never saw it.

Why?

Our estate used a mail-screening room after threats connected to my business.

Incoming envelopes passed through security and household administration before reaching us.

Veronica had acquired authority over personal correspondence during the year after Elena left because she was helping with:

“family communications.”

She placed a routing note in the household system:

Correspondence from Elena Bennett/Vaughn regarding separation to be held for private family review due legal sensitivity.

Who approved it?

No one formally.

A junior household administrator assumed Veronica had authority.

Mail was placed in a locked personal tray for her.

She collected it.

Letter after letter.

Thirty-four over nineteen months.

Some to me.

Some to Sofia.

Some both.

Why did Elena continue if no answer came?

Certified tracking showed delivery.

That was precisely why.

She believed I was receiving them.

Silence became a response.

She wrote less frequently.

Then more.

The newest letter arrived six days before she appeared.

In it:

Alexander, I am coming to New York if you do not answer this. I cannot keep talking to a wall.

Veronica read it.

Panicked.

That panic, we later realized, probably contributed to her cruelty toward Sofia that week.

Elena was no longer an abstract absent wife.

She was approaching the house.

May you like

And Sofia was the living proof Veronica could never fully replace her.
