Chapter 4 - Where Elena had been

Elena had not spent three years in captivity.

That was the first fact outsiders struggled to accept.

She had lived.

Poorly at first.

Then increasingly normally.

Her aunt Margaret owned a small house outside Manchester, Vermont.

Elena stayed there after leaving the maternal mental-health program.

She spent the first four months in treatment with a psychiatrist and therapist locally.

Her postpartum depression improved.

Her anxiety reduced.

She began sleeping.

Then she worked part-time remotely reviewing historic-building preservation plans.

By year two, she rented a small apartment.

She joined a consultancy in Albany handling preservation compliance.

She had a bank account.

A phone.

A car.

She was not physically prevented from contacting me.

That made Veronica’s manipulation both less cinematic and more unsettling.

Elena was convinced I did not want her back.

Not by one forged document.

By a sequence.

First:

The clipped recording.

During Elena’s residential treatment, Veronica visited her.

I did not know.

Veronica told me Elena had requested:

“No family visitors.”

Technically true.

She had removed me and my father from her visitor list.

She had not removed Veronica.

Why?

They were friends.

Veronica had known Elena before she knew me.

They met through a preservation fundraiser.

Veronica became a trusted practical helper after Sofia’s birth.

She brought groceries.

Handled calls.

Sat with Elena while I worked.

The perfect person to become the bridge.

Then the bridge became the gate.

Veronica played Elena the recording.

My voice:

“I choose my family.”

She told Elena it came from an argument between me and my father.

That part was true.

She said:

“Alexander told Charles he is choosing the Vaughns and the company because he cannot keep destabilizing everything for your mental health.”

False.

The real sentence:

“Elena and our daughter are my family.”

Removed.

Then Veronica showed her a screenshot of a message from me.

We found the original later.

I had written to Veronica:

If Elena truly wants no calls for a week, I’ll respect it. Tell her I’m here whenever she wants me.

Veronica showed only:

I’ll respect it.

Then told Elena:

“He wants you to stay away until lawyers work out Sofia.”

Elena panicked.

Postpartum treatment had made one fear especially sharp:

That I would use her diagnosis to claim she was unsafe.

I had never threatened that.

My father had once said something unforgivable:

“If she cannot manage herself, you need to think about the baby.”

I had shouted at him for it.

Veronica knew.

She used the fear.

Elena left treatment early and went to Margaret.

She sent me one real message:

I need time. Please don’t come after me yet.

That one was genuinely hers.

Everything after became harder to separate.
