Chapter 24 - My father changes one rule

Charles Vaughn did not get a redemption arc.
He did something smaller.
He resigned from the family-office committee that handled personal risk and family governance.
Why?
“Because I keep thinking authority is the same thing as responsibility.”
Good.
We separated:
Corporate security.
Family security.
Personal legal matters.
No romantic-partner communications routed through family staff without explicit consent.
No one could place a hold on another adult family member’s correspondence without:
Legal basis.
Written approval.
Notification where lawful.
Ridiculous that such a rule became necessary.
It did.
Charles also apologized to Sofia.
Not about Veronica.
About a phrase Sofia overheard later.
He once said:
“Your mother should have come back sooner.”
Elena heard.
So did Sofia.
Sofia asked:
“Mommy late?”
Charles froze.
Elena walked away.
The old family would have ignored it.
Charles followed later.
He knelt beside Sofia.
“I said something unfair.”
“Mommy late?”
“No. Grown-ups had a difficult problem.”
“Grandpa bad say?”
“Yes.”
She considered.
“Say sorry Mommy.”
Charles looked at Elena across the room.
Then did.
No defense.
That was change.
Not enough to erase what he contributed culturally.
Enough for that afternoon.
