Chapter 1 - The Pendant

My name is Daniel Carter.

I was thirty-nine years old when I opened a bridal-suite door twenty-two minutes before my wedding and saw my fiancée holding my twenty-month-old daughter by the hair.

The room was glowing.

That is what I remember first.

Late-afternoon sunlight poured through tall windows and turned everything warm.

Cream walls.

Gold-framed vanity mirror.

Rows of cosmetics.

White veil.

Wedding bouquet.

A small flower basket on the carpet.

My daughter Sophie wore pale pink.

Amanda Hale wore white.

For half a second the whole room still looked like a photograph people would have called beautiful.

Then Amanda jerked Sophie’s head backward.

“Tell me where you hid it!”

Sophie cried.

Amanda slapped her.

One open palm across the cheek.

My daughter made a sharp little sound I had never heard from her before.

The double doors flew open because I had hit them harder than I realized.

Amanda turned.

I stopped for perhaps half a heartbeat.

Shock.

Confusion.

Then I moved.

“Sophie.”

She saw me.

Her face crumpled.

“Dad!”

At twenty months, some of Sophie’s words still arrived soft around the edges.

Dad never did.

She stumbled toward me.

I crossed the distance.

Pulled her behind my legs.

One hand stayed down against her shoulder while I looked at Amanda.

“What the hell are you doing?”

Amanda’s breathing was hard.

Her wedding makeup was still perfect.

Her veil was still fixed carefully into her hair.

No torn fabric.

No broken mirror.

No overturned furniture.

She reached for the bouquet on the vanity and clutched it against her chest.

“She ruined everything!”

I looked down at Sophie.

Her cheek was flushed.

She had tears on both sides of her face.

Then I looked back at the bride who had just said a toddler ruined everything.

My expression changed.

I felt it.

The confusion disappeared.

I grabbed the bouquet out of Amanda’s hands.

Then hurled it into her face and upper chest.

Hard.

White flowers exploded apart.

Amanda staggered backward.

Petals scattered over the carpet.

A few stems struck the vanity.

One cosmetic bottle tipped and rolled.

I stayed between Amanda and Sophie.

No dialogue.

Just my own breathing and Sophie crying behind me.

Then I felt a small tug at the back of my shirt.

“Daddy.”

I turned.

Sophie had opened her flower basket.

She reached inside with both hands.

Pulled out a small oval pendant.

Then placed it in my palm.

“Daddy… I found this in Amanda’s room.”

I opened it.

Inside was a tiny portrait of a woman.

Clear.

Old-fashioned.

Probably thirty-something in the photograph.

Light brown hair.

Pale complexion.

A quiet smile.

I had never seen her.

I looked down at the image.

Something about the object made me stop.

Then I looked at Amanda.

Her face had turned white.

Not angry.

Not embarrassed.

Terrified.

She stood rooted among the broken bouquet.

Her breathing became rapid and shallow.

Her eyes widened and locked onto the pendant in my hand.

I said nothing.

May you like

Neither did she.
