Chapter 24 - Claire Gives Ruby the Choice

At thirteen, Ruby asked for the pendant.
Not the letter.
The object.
Claire contacted the therapist who had been holding it.
They brought it home.
Ruby opened it.
Looked at her mother’s younger face.
Then asked:
“This was mine?”
“Yes.”
“Amanda kept it?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Claire answered carefully.
“She was having a hard time with the fact that you wanted me and that you might come home.”
Ruby looked angry.
“Was she trying to be my mom?”
“She cared for you like a foster parent. She also wanted to adopt you.”
“Did you hate her?”
Claire took time.
“I hated some things she did.”
“Not answer.”
Children learn.
Claire smiled sadly.
“I hated her for a while.”
Ruby nodded.
Then:
“Do I read letter?”
“You choose.”
She waited another three months.
Then read Amanda’s letter with her therapist.
No Amanda present.
No Claire hovering.
Afterward Ruby chose not to respond.
She wore the pendant once.
Then placed it in a jewelry box.
That was where it belonged.
Not hidden.
Not worshipped.
Not evidence.
Just hers again.
Claire later sent Amanda’s lawyer one sentence with Ruby’s permission:
Ruby received her belongings. She does not want contact.
Amanda replied through counsel:
Understood.
Boundary respected.
That was one of the clearest signs that Amanda had changed something important.

She let no remain no.
