Chapter 20 - The Canceled Future

The wedding cancellation created a strange grief.
Not for Amanda’s violence.
For the future I had believed existed two hours earlier.
Our planned house renovations.
Family vacations.
Sophie calling Amanda some affectionate name someday.
A second child, perhaps.
Christmas.
Ordinary photographs.
People assume ending an unsafe relationship should feel only like relief.
It does not.
Relief and grief can occupy the same kitchen.
One night, four months after the wedding, I found the seating chart in a drawer.
DANIEL CARTER.
AMANDA HALE.
SOPHIE CARTER.
EMILY CARTER at another family table.
Caroline.
Friends.
I sat on the floor holding paper.
Then laughed at myself.
My life had become a man grieving cardstock.
I threw it away.
Not ceremonially.
Recycling.
Emily later asked:
“Do you miss her?”
“Yes.”
She nodded.
No jealousy.
No:
How can you?
She understood relationships can become unsafe without erasing every good day before.
That understanding helped me avoid a mistake Amanda had made.
I did not need the past to become entirely false in order to leave it.
Amanda had been kind sometimes.
She had harmed Sophie.
The second fact set the boundary.
The first remained part of memory.
May you like
Both.
