Chapter 14 - Claire’s Recovery Was Not Amanda’s Story

Claire asked me not to turn her recovery into a subplot about Amanda.
I respected that.
She had completed treatment years earlier.
Maintained sobriety.
Worked as an office manager for a dental group.
Raised Ruby.
Had a partner named James who entered the family when Ruby was eight.
Normal life.
Claire did not become famous for reunification.
The newspaper article was one day.
Her life was thousands.
She told me:
“The worst thing people do is freeze me at the part where I lost custody.”
I understood.
Amanda had done a version of that too.
During foster care, Claire was:
unsafe mother.
Even after facts changed.
Even after months of progress.
Amanda kept relating to an earlier version because that version supported keeping Ruby.
This was one reason Claire reacted strongly when I asked whether Amanda had:
“saved Ruby.”
“She cared for her when I couldn’t.”
Claire chose words carefully.
“That matters.”
Then:
“But caring for someone during their crisis does not make their future yours.”
That line could have described many relationships.
Foster parent and child.
Parent and adult child.
Partner and vulnerable sibling.
Even me and Sophie someday.
Care does not create ownership.
The healthiest caretakers eventually tolerate becoming less necessary.
Amanda had struggled with that twice.
With Ruby.
Then, differently, with me.
She wanted the wedding to confirm she was necessary to our household.
The pendant threatened to make me reevaluate her.
Her panic was not only:
Daniel will discover I lied.
It was:
Daniel may stop needing me in the role I built.
That did not excuse the slap.
May you like
It clarified why the object frightened her so much.
