Chapter 26 - The Second Pendant

Three years after the canceled wedding, Sophie was almost five.

Caroline married a quiet accountant named Owen Blake.

Small wedding.

Garden ceremony.

Sophie was flower girl again.

She wore yellow this time.

Carried a little basket.

I had worried about that basket.

I did not say so.

Sophie remembered none of the original bridal suite clearly.

At the reception she ran through the dressing room looking for Caroline’s shoes.

Then stopped.

Something silver lay beneath a chair.

A necklace.

Small locket.

My entire body reacted before my brain did.

Sophie picked it up.

“Dad.”

I walked over.

She opened it.

Inside was a photograph of an elderly man.

“Who?”

“I don’t know.”

A bridesmaid named Rachel entered.

Saw the necklace.

“Oh my God. That’s mine.”

Sophie held it out.

“Found.”

Rachel crouched.

“Thank you.”

No grabbing.

No accusation.

No demand.

“Where?”

“Chair.”

Rachel smiled.

“That picture is my grandfather.”

Sophie looked again.

“He old.”

Rachel laughed.

“He was.”

Then put the pendant around her neck.

Sophie ran back toward the dance floor.

That was all.

I stood still.

Caroline noticed.

“You okay?”

“Yes.”

“You’re doing that face.”

Apparently everyone had a name for my face.

I watched Sophie disappear through the doorway.

Three years earlier, a child finding jewelry had become the trigger for violence because an adult cared more about controlling a secret than protecting the child holding it.

Now:

Found.

Thank you.

Returned.

Ordinary.

May you like

I finally understood how much I had wanted ordinary.
