Chapter 2 - Twenty-Two Minutes

The wedding never happened.

That decision took less than a minute.

The consequences took years.

I picked Sophie up.

She clung to me.

Amanda took one step forward.

“Daniel.”

I backed away.

“Don’t.”

“I can explain.”

“You can stay exactly where you are.”

“It isn’t what you think.”

“I don’t know what I think.”

That was true.

I knew only what I had seen.

Amanda pulling Sophie’s hair.

Amanda striking Sophie.

Amanda panicking over a pendant.

Everything after that had to wait.

I walked into the hallway.

My sister Caroline stood at the far end holding a garment bag.

She saw Sophie’s cheek.

Her face changed.

“What happened?”

“Get Emily.”

Emily Carter was Sophie’s mother.

My ex-wife.

She was already downstairs because she had been invited to the ceremony.

We had divorced when Sophie was eleven months old.

Not bitterly.

Not beautifully.

We simply had become better co-parents than spouses.

Amanda had known Emily would attend.

Had even said:

“Sophie deserves both parents there.”

At the time I took that as evidence of maturity.

Now I was less certain of everything.

Caroline said:

“Daniel, what happened?”

“Amanda hit her.”

The garment bag slid from Caroline’s hand.

“What?”

“Get Emily.”

Then I called the wedding coordinator.

She arrived pale and nervous.

“Mr. Carter?”

“Cancel the ceremony.”

She stared.

“We can delay—”

“No.”

“The officiant is already—”

“No ceremony.”

Behind me Amanda appeared in the doorway.

“Daniel.”

The coordinator looked between us.

I raised my hand without turning.

“Do not come closer to Sophie.”

Amanda stopped.

Her voice changed.

Less furious.

More careful.

“You’re humiliating me.”

I finally looked at her.

“That is what you are worried about?”

“You threw my bouquet at me.”

“Yes.”

“You hit me with it.”

“Yes.”

“I’m bleeding.”

She touched a tiny scratch near her collarbone from a broken stem.

I looked.

Then looked away.

My anger had made another problem.

Sophie had been safe behind me when I threw the bouquet.

That mattered.

Protection had already succeeded.

Everything after that was retaliation.

I would own it later.

But Amanda would not use it to erase what happened first.

Emily arrived.

Still wearing a dark blue formal dress.

The moment Sophie saw her:

“Mommy.”

Emily ran.

I handed Sophie over.

She examined her cheek.

Then looked at me.

“Who?”

“Amanda.”

Emily’s eyes moved past me.

Amanda stood in the doorway.

Silence became dangerous.

I stepped between them.

“No.”

Emily looked at me as if I had lost my mind.

“She hit our baby.”

“I know.”

“And you’re protecting her?”

“I am preventing this hallway from becoming worse.”

Emily’s jaw tightened.

Then she nodded.

That was co-parenting in crisis.

Not agreeing emotionally.

Agreeing on the next safe action.

We took Sophie for medical evaluation.

The bride stayed behind.
