Chapter 14 - My daughter gets angry at me

Recovery made Alessandra stronger.

Strength made her angry.

At me too.

“You should have called.”

“What?”

“When Teresa told you the nurse stopped.”

“You wanted privacy.”

“Teresa said Colin said I wanted privacy.”

“Yes.”

“You believed him.”

“I was trying to respect your marriage.”

She laughed bitterly.

“That’s convenient.”

“What do you mean?”

“You ignore boundaries when you think you’re right about restaurants, apartments, cars, investments—”

“Okay.”

“—but when I actually needed you to question something, suddenly you’re Mr. Respectful.”

That landed.

She continued:

“You didn’t call because you wanted to prove you weren’t controlling.”

Maybe.

Not consciously.

Still possible.

“I should have checked with you directly.”

“Yes.”

“I’m sorry.”

She looked at me.

“Do you know what I wanted?”

“What?”

“For you to ask me.”

Simple.

Not rescue.

Not staff.

Ask.

Do you still want the nurse?

Is this your decision?

How are you really doing?

Three questions.

I had sent money instead.

Money solves logistical problems.

It does not automatically create communication.

I was learning that late.
