Chapter 24 - Giorgio is not the night nurse

At first, I overcorrected.

I visited the guesthouse every morning.

Then afternoon.

Then evening.

Brought food.

Checked water.

Asked about medication.

Counted iron tablets.

One week after discharge, Alessandra said:

“Dad.”

“What?”

“Go home.”

“I am home.”

She stared.

Technically true.

Wrong answer.

“Leave me alone for six hours.”

I almost asked:

Are you sure?

Stopped.

“Okay.”

I left.

Did not call.

At hour four I checked the guesthouse security system.

Exterior cameras only.

Still interference.

I closed the app.

At six hours, Alessandra texted:

Alive. Theo also alive. Shocking.

I replied:

Impressive.

She sent:

Do not come over.

I did not.

That was harder than buying a nurse.

Over time, our relationship changed.

She asked for help specifically.

Can your driver take me to the infusion center?

Can you hold Theo for an hour?

Can you have Teresa find a housekeeper for Tuesday?

I answered the question asked.

Not three more.

Sometimes protection means becoming more available and less intrusive at the same time.

That paradox took me fifty-seven years.
