Chapter 25 - Alessandra becomes strong differently

By Theo’s first birthday, Alessandra’s hemoglobin was normal.

The iron deficiency resolved.

Her incision healed.

Sleep improved in the chaotic way parents call improved.

She returned to work three days a week.

Then four.

Not because returning to work proved recovery.

Because she wanted to.

She sold her interest in a small design partnership and started consulting independently.

Flexible schedule.

No family money? Of course she still had family privilege.

Pretending otherwise would be silly.

But she stopped letting me solve every business inconvenience.

When I offered office space in a Bellafonte building:

“No.”

“Market rent.”

“No.”

“Good building.”

“Dad.”

“Fine.”

She leased somewhere else.

More expensive.

Worse parking.

I said nothing.

Growth.

She dated nobody for two years.

Not trauma.

Choice.

Theo filled enough of her schedule.

She spent Thursday evenings alone after Colin picked him up.

At first she hated the quiet.

Later she guarded it.

Recovery was not returning to the woman who had carried groceries before the collapse.

That woman was already trying too hard to prove independence.

The woman afterward understood that accepting help and surrendering authority were not the same thing.
