Chapter 8 - The groceries

Why was Alessandra carrying groceries when she collapsed?

Because Marcia refused delivery that afternoon.

Their grocery account had free same-day delivery.

Alessandra placed an order.

Marcia canceled it.

Not secretly.

Openly.

“Fresh air will do you good.”

Alessandra said:

“I’m tired.”

“You’re always tired because you never move.”

Colin was home.

He heard.

Did nothing.

Then:

“Mom might be right. You’ve barely left the house.”

A recovering postpartum woman being encouraged to take a gentle walk is one thing.

Sending her to a supermarket alone to buy groceries for four adults is another.

Alessandra drove.

Walked slowly.

Used the cart for support.

A store employee offered to load the bags into her car.

She accepted.

At home, Marcia was eating.

Colin was answering work email.

No one came outside.

Alessandra carried the groceries herself.

Two trips.

She collapsed on the second.

Later, when I asked Colin why he did not help, he said:

“I didn’t know she was bringing everything in.”

The dining-room camera? There was no camera.

We had no way to prove what he saw before she fell.

But we did not need to.

He was in the kitchen afterward.

He saw her on the floor.

And his first response was not to kneel beside her.

That fact needed no interpretation.
