Chapter 21 - Alessandra files for divorce

She waited six months.

I never asked why.

Then she told me.

“I wanted to know if I was leaving because you hated him.”

“You think that controls you?”

“Sometimes.”

Fair.

“And?”

“I’m leaving because I don’t trust him with my reality.”

That sentence was precise.

Colin had not cheated.

Had not hit her.

Had not stolen her savings.

But he had decided what she was allowed to know about support arranged for her own recovery.

He had lied because he believed her actual preference would interfere with the household he wanted.

Marriage did not survive that.

The divorce was not war.

Prenup.

Separate investment accounts.

Joint house.

Retirement contributions.

Normal disputes.

The home sold.

Equity divided under agreement.

Alessandra returned the unused portion of a large renovation gift I had given them? No.

My lawyers suggested arguing it was separate.

I said nothing.

It was her marriage.

The settlement treated the property according to documents and state law.

Colin kept his career.

Alessandra kept hers when she eventually returned.

No one became bankrupt.

Theo remained the difficult part.

He deserved parents, not a verdict.
