Chapter 6 - Why Alessandra said nothing to me

That question tortured me.
Why didn’t you call?
I did not ask it immediately.
Dr. Chen warned me.
“Do not turn disclosure into another examination she has to pass.”
So I waited.
Two days later, after Alessandra was discharged to my guesthouse with Theo and a rotating care plan she approved herself, she told me.
“You would have come over.”
“Yes.”
“You would have thrown Colin out.”
“Maybe.”
“You would have taken over.”
I stopped.
“Taken over what?”
“Everything.”
That hurt because it was partly true.
She continued:
“You would have brought three nurses, a chef, security, a lawyer, probably a pediatrician.”
“Two nurses.”
She stared.
Wrong joke.
“Sorry.”
She looked at Theo sleeping beside her.
“I wanted to be married.”
“What does that mean?”
“I wanted Colin and me to figure things out without you fixing it.”
There.
My money had always made rescue available.
That did not mean rescue felt neutral.
“Did you believe I canceled the nurse?”
“Yes.”
“Did that make you angry?”
“Very.”
“Why didn’t you call me and say so?”
“Because I thought you were proving a point.”
“What point?”
“That I was spoiled.”
I stared at her.
“Have I ever called you spoiled?”
“No.”
“Then why?”
She looked away.
“Colin has.”
There.
