Chapter 10 - The Cake

The cake incident created a separate misdemeanor battery allegation involving Sabine.

No serious injury.

Humiliation.

Force.

I had put my hand on her head and driven her into food.

Not defense.

Not necessary to recover the ring.

Not necessary to end the engagement.

The prosecutor folded that conduct into the same negotiated diversion structure with additional anger-management requirements.

My attorney told me:

“You are fortunate nobody was badly hurt.”

She was right.

Powerful men receive too much cultural encouragement to turn anger into spectacle.

I had done exactly that.

It looked dramatic.

It was still wrong.

Wren eventually asked:

“Why did you push Sabine in cake?”

“Because I was angry.”

“She mean.”

“Yes.”

“So?”

Children remember every lesson when it becomes inconvenient.

“So I should have ended the wedding without doing that.”

She nodded.

May you like

“Cake was good before.”

That may have been her strongest objection.
