Chapter 6 - The Agreement Nobody Explained to Me

Eventually Nora and Sabine entered a mediated agreement.
Not because Nora surrendered motherhood.
Because litigation was crushing her financially.
Sabine had resources.
Nora did not.
The agreement gave Sabine primary physical custody and educational decision-making for a fixed period while preserving Nora’s visitation and providing for review.
Then life became messy.
Nora moved for work.
Sabine enrolled Elodie in private school.
Visits became less frequent.
Transportation became disputed.
Nora missed two visits due to illness and one because her car broke down.
Sabine documented everything.
Then another review.
By then Elodie was seven.
The judge continued the arrangement but emphasized:
“Sabine Hartwell is a guardian and custodian, not a substitute for the child’s biological history or identity.”
That sentence sat in a court order.
Sabine never mentioned it to me.
Instead she told me:
“Elodie’s mother abandoned her.”
Not true.
Nora had struggled.
Failed badly for a period.
Then recovered.

And kept trying.
The difference mattered.
