Chapter 24 - Sabine Sees Nora Again

Two years after the engagement ended, Sabine and Nora agreed to mediation.

Not reconciliation.

Communication.

Elodie was twelve.

Tired of messages traveling through lawyers.

The mediator asked both women what they feared most.

Nora:

“That Elodie believes I chose drugs over her.”

Sabine:

“That she’ll decide I was never really family.”

Both fears were understandable.

Then Nora said:

“You were family. You still don’t get to erase me.”

Sabine cried.

“I know.”

Nora did not comfort her.

Then Sabine admitted something important.

“I told people you abandoned her because it was easier than saying you recovered and I didn’t want to give anything back.”

Nora closed her eyes.

That sentence was probably worth more than years of procedural argument.

Not forgiveness.

Truth.

They created direct communication rules.

No using Elodie as messenger.

Shared calendar.

No competing labels.

If Elodie called Sabine Mom:

Nora would not punish.

If Elodie called Nora Mom:

Sabine would not withdraw.

Adults would survive language.

That became the agreement.
