Chapter 12 - Wren Hears “She Won’t Matter”

The physical bruises faded.

The sentence did not.

Because she won’t matter anymore after our wedding.

Wren asked me about it three nights later.

“What did Sabine mean?”

I considered lying.

Rejected it.

“She was wrong.”

“About what?”

“She thought marrying me would change how important you are in our family.”

“Would it?”

“No.”

“Why she think?”

“Because some adults think love is like a chair. If someone new sits down, somebody else has to get up.”

Wren stared.

“That dumb.”

“Yes.”

“Did Elodie take my chair?”

“No.”

“Colton?”

“No.”

“Sabine?”

“No.”

Then:

“You never have to compete with another child for being my daughter.”

That answer mattered because I did not want Wren blaming Elodie.

The ten-year-old girl had not created Sabine’s hierarchy.

She was trapped inside it too.
