Chapter 1 - the black silk tie

The afternoon sun streamed through the high arched windows of the Cole estate, painting long golden stripes across the polished white marble of the grand foyer. Standing near the foot of the sweeping staircase, dressed in a pale-pink maid uniform with a crisp white apron and matching headpiece, Emma Hayes held her breath. Her hands were clasped tightly over her apron, her knuckles white with a fear she had carried in her chest for three long years.
Marching across the cavernous marble hall with hilarious determination was three-year-old Nora.
The little girl wore an elegant yellow dress, white socks, and tiny yellow shoes, her long blonde curls bouncing under a bright yellow bow. Draped around her neck and trailing on the floor like a dark shadow was an oversized black silk tie belonging to Adrian Cole. In her small hand, she clutched a tiny yellow toy purse, holding it by the handles like an executive carrying a high-stakes briefcase.
Four heavily armed guards standing near the front doors stared in dead, stunned silence. None of them dared to move or smile.
Nora stopped right in the middle of the foyer. She lifted her small bare wrist, stared down at it as if inspecting a million-dollar luxury watch, and then held up a bright pink plastic toy phone to her ear. She narrowed her bright blue eyes, mimicking the exact scowl of the most feared Mafia boss in Connecticut.
Nora (seriously): “Handle it.”
Emma’s heart leaped into her throat. She took a step forward, ready to snatch her daughter before Adrian stepped out of his private study.
Nora took three exaggerated, commanding strides across the stone floor, her little head held high, but her shoe caught the trailing end of the black silk tie. She tumbled forward onto the marble, her toy purse sliding across the floor.
Emma gasped, but before she could reach her, Nora scrambled right back up to her feet. She brushed off her yellow dress, adjusted the oversized tie with ridiculous dignity, and puffed out her little chest.
From the top of the grand staircase, a deep, rich sound echoed through the high ceilings.
Adrian Cole stood near the carved wooden balustrade, one hand resting on the railing, laughing out loud.
The sound shocked the entire foyer into absolute stone. In the five years since his younger brother James had died, no guard or staff member had ever heard Adrian Cole laugh. Tall, broad-shouldered, and deeply masculine in an open-collar black dress shirt, dark trousers, and polished black leather shoes, Adrian commanded the room with terrifying authority. Heavy black tattoos snaked up his neck and wrists, but for the first time in half a decade, his sharp, rugged features were warmed by genuine amusement.
Adrian descended the marble stairs with slow, deliberate steps. He crouched down right in front of Nora, still smiling gently.
Nora looked right into his dark, intense eyes. She raised her little hand and rested her chin thoughtfully on her small fist—a distinct, quiet posture.
Emma’s breath hitched, a icy wave of pure terror washing through her veins. That exact gesture—the subtle tilt of the head, the chin resting on the fist—had never belonged to Adrian. It was the signature habit of James Cole, Adrian’s late younger brother.
Nora, oblivious to her mother's panic, proudly unlatched her tiny yellow toy purse. She reached inside her small hands and pulled out a heavy, tarnished silver lighter.
Adrian’s smile vanished in an instant. The warmth in his eyes died, replaced by an ice-cold, suffocating stillness.
He recognized the lighter immediately. It was an antique silver lighter engraved with the Cole family crest—the personal keepsake that his brother James had carried everywhere until the night he vanished.
Adrian reached out a broad, tattooed hand, his fingers trembling slightly as he took the lighter from Nora’s small palm. He turned it over in his hand. Scratched crudely into the silver on the back were two initials: J.C.—alongside a date stamped just weeks before James’s death.
Nora raised her little hand and pointed toward Emma.

Nora (innocently): “Mommy says Daddy gave it to me.”
Emma went completely, utterly pale, the air leaving her lungs as Adrian slowly stood up to his full height, his dark eyes locking onto her face like a blade.
