Chapter 13 - Shadows at the GateMarcus hit the speakerphone button. "Speak, Harrison."

Static hissed over the line before the head of estate security spoke, his tone urgent. "Mr. Vance, we have an unauthorized black SUV sitting two hundred yards outside the main entrance gates. Thermal imaging shows four armed occupants. They aren't broadcasting any local security codes, but they’ve jammed our external cellular relay."
Marcus’s eyes hardened, every trace of grief instantly replaced by the ruthless strategic instinct that had made him the head of the Vance empire.
"Activate the perimeter lockdown," Marcus ordered coldly. "Raise the steel bollards, turn on the floodlights, and fall back to the inner courtyard. No one enters this house."
"Understood, sir."
Marcus closed his laptop, unplugged the micro-drive, and slipped it inside his breast pocket alongside the silver lighter. He turned to Clara, who was already standing, her face deathly pale.
"They tracked the signal," Clara whispered in horror. "When you accessed the drive... Richard’s surveillance software must have pinged their network!"
"They won't touch a hair on her head," Marcus said, his voice ringing with absolute certainty. He walked around the desk, opened a concealed wall safe behind the mahogany bookshelf, and pulled out a matte-black sidearm, checking the magazine chamber with a practiced click.
He walked over to Clara, grabbing her firmly by the shoulders, grounding her panic. "Listen to me, Clara. This house was built like a fortress by my grandfather. The panic room beneath the library has six-inch reinforced steel plating and independent air filtration. Take Lily down there right now."
"What about you?" she asked, her eyes wide with terror.
"I’m going to finish the conversation my brother started four years ago," Marcus replied softly.

He reached out, his thumb gently brushing a stray hair from her forehead. "Go. Keep my niece safe."
Clara nodded, her hand lingering on his forearm for a brief second before she turned and ran toward the guest bedroom to gather her sleeping child.
