Chapter 11 - The Interrogation of the Silver FlameThe grandfather clock in the grand hallway chimed two in the morning, its heavy bronze pendulum slicing through the suffocating silence of the study. Marcus Vance sat behind his dark mahogany desk, his knuckles pale as he pressed his thumb against the smooth, cold contours of the sterling silver lighter. Under the desk lamp’s amber beam, the initials E.V. gleamed back at him—a phantom signature from a brother buried four years ago.

Across the room, Clara stood near the rain-slicked balcony glass. Her hands were clasped so tightly together that her fingernails bit into her palms. Her apron was gone, replaced by a simple beige cardigan that seemed too thin for the chill creeping through the estate.

"I am going to ask you once, Clara," Marcus said, his voice dropping into a register so dangerously low it vibrated through the floorboards. "And your answer will determine whether you leave this house in a patrol car or remain under my protection. Where did you get Ethan’s lighter?"

Clara closed her eyes, a soft tremble passing through her shoulders. She didn't scream or break into frantic denials. Instead, she let out a long, shuddering sigh that sounded like a breath she had been holding for half a decade.

"He gave it to me," she whispered, turning to face him. Her eyes were red-rimmed, glistening with unshed tears. "Three days before the explosion at the lakeside estate. He put it in my hand and told me that if anything ever happened to him... if he didn't come back from his final meeting with your uncle Richard... I was to keep it hidden until someone in the Vance family proved worthy of the truth."

Marcus froze. His uncle Richard—the chief operating officer of Vance Global Holdings and the man who had delivered Ethan’s eulogy—was the very person who had convinced the police that Ethan’s death was an accidental fuel line explosion.

"You're lying," Marcus rasped, though his heart hammered brutally against his ribs. "Ethan didn't even know you. You were hired through an agency six months ago!"

"I was hired six months ago because I spent three years running from Richard’s men!" Clara cried out, her composure finally shattering. She took three swift steps toward the desk, leaning over the polished wood, her eyes blazing with raw, unadulterated fear. "Look at the bottom of the casing, Marcus! Pull the fuel flint holder! Do you think I stole a dead man’s lighter just to keep it in my purse as a souvenir?!"

Marcus’s hands moved on instinct. He raised the silver lighter, flicked open the hinged top, and pulled firmly on the flint wheel column. With a sharp metallic click, the internal sleeve slid out of the outer silver casing. Hidden within the hollowed-out base was not cotton fuel packing, but a micro-encrypted flash drive no larger than a fingernail.

Marcus stared at the tiny piece of hardware, his breath catching in his throat.

"Ethan knew they were coming for him," Clara whispered, wiping a tear from her cheek. "And he died ensuring Lily and I wouldn't be found."
