Chapter 14 - The Bloodline VerifiedInside the subterranean panic vault beneath the library, the low hum of the air purifier provided a soothing background rhythm. Lily sat on a plush carpet, rubbing her eyes sleepily while drawing squiggly shapes on a notepad with a blue crayon.

Clara sat beside her, her phone held tightly in her hand. Above them, through the thick stone ceiling, faint thuds of heavy iron doors locking into place echoed through the mansion’s security superstructure.
An hour passed before the vault door’s electronic keypad chimed, and the heavy pneumatic seals released with a hiss of compressed air. The heavy door swung open, revealing Marcus.
His dark suit jacket was gone, his white dress shirt sleeves rolled up to his forearms, a faint smudge of grease along his jawline, but his expression was entirely calm. Behind him stood Harrison and two senior security guards, their weapons holstered.
"The SUV cleared out the moment our perimeter turrets locked onto their vehicle," Marcus said, stepping into the vault and closing the door behind him. "They were scouts. Richard knows we have the drive, but he won't risk an open assault on the main estate without knowing how much evidence I’ve already sent to federal prosecutors."
Marcus walked over to Lily, lowering his massive frame until he was sitting cross-legged on the rug beside her.
Lily looked up from her drawing, offering him a bright, sleepy smile. "Hi, Uncle Marcus."
Marcus froze, his breath hitching in his throat. He looked up at Clara, who gave him a small, tearful nod.
"I told her this morning," Clara whispered softly. "She deserves to know who her family is."
Marcus looked back down at the little girl. Tears burned behind his eyes as he reached out his hand. Lily didn't hesitate; she climbed into his lap, her tiny arms wrapping around his neck, burying her face into his shoulder.

For the second time in four years, Marcus felt a warm tear escape his eye, falling onto the little girl's soft curls. He held her close, feeling the steady beat of her heart—the living legacy of his lost brother.
"I promise you, Lily," Marcus murmured into her hair, his hand cradling her back. "Nobody is ever going to make you or your mommy run again."
