Chapter 18 - The Unbroken PromiseThree days later, the storm had passed completely, leaving the grounds of the Vance estate bathed in warm, crisp autumn sunlight.

Clara sat on the wooden bench near the estate’s rose garden, watching Lily play tag with a young golden retriever puppy that Marcus had brought home the previous evening. The little girl’s belly laugh echoed through the clear air—a sound that had once been foreign to the quiet mansion, but was now the heartbeat of the home.

Marcus walked down the stone steps from the terrace, holding two cups of fresh coffee. He handed one to Clara and sat down beside her on the bench.

"Richard’s bail was denied this morning," Marcus said quietly, his gaze fixed on Lily as she tumbled playfully onto the soft grass. "The federal prosecutors are bringing full racketeering and conspiracy charges. He’ll spend the rest of his life behind bars."

Clara took a slow sip of her coffee, letting out a long, peaceful sigh. The constant, gnawing anxiety that had defined her existence for four years was finally fading away.

"I still can't believe it's over," she murmured, looking at Marcus with deep, genuine gratitude. "For so long, I felt like we were running in the dark."

Marcus reached into his pocket and pulled out the silver lighter. He didn't hold it with anger or grief anymore; he held it with reverence.

"Ethan gave you this lighter to protect you," Marcus said softly, turning to look into Clara’s soft brown eyes. "But he gave it to me so I could find my way back to what matters. You and Lily saved my life, Clara."

Clara reached out, her fingers gently overlapping his as they held the silver lighter together. "We saved each other, Marcus."
