Chapter 37 - The Ghost on the Radio

Before my mind could fully process the nightmare in my hands, the satellite transponder began to beep rapidly. A small speaker on its face crackled to life with static.

"Marcus."

The voice was rough, scarred, and cracked with age, but it was Julian. There was no mistaking the cadence, the slight rasp on the sibilants that he’d had ever since breaking his collarbone as a teenager.

"Julian!" I grabbed the unit. "Where are you? What is this?"

"I’m watching the ridge road," he said, breathing hard. "You don't have much time. Richard was never in that cell, Marcus. The entire trial was orchestrated. The syndicate used the whistleblower case to flush me out into the open, and you gave them the roadmap when you filed Lily’s trust into public record."

A chill hotter than boiling water raced through my veins. "Lily... the estate. Nora and Lily are alone!"

"Harrison is on Richard's payroll," Julian snapped over the static. "The head of your private security. He's been feeding them the perimeter codes since dawn. Marcus, listen to me—"

The audio cut out with a deafening screech of feedback, followed by the distant, unmistakable thunder of a high-caliber gunshot cracking through the valley below.
