Chapter 19 - The Sealed EnvelopeBy late afternoon, the estate’s legal team arrived to finalize the trust documents. In the study, Marcus signed the final paperwork that officially recognized Lily as Ethan Vance’s rightful heir, securing her half-ownership of the Vance family trust and ensuring she and Clara would never face financial insecurity again.

As the lawyers departed, Harrison walked into the study, carrying a small, weathered leather box that had been retrieved from Ethan’s personal safety deposit locker in Zurich—a locker that had only been unlocked following Richard’s official indictment.

"This was inside the vault, Mr. Vance," Harrison said, placing the box on the desk before bowing respectfully and exiting the room.

Marcus called Clara into the study. Together, they stood beside the mahogany desk as Marcus lifted the brass latch of the leather box.

Inside lay a collection of childhood photographs of Marcus and Ethan, a silver baby rattle that had belonged to Ethan, and a sealed manila envelope addressed to Marcus and Clara.

Marcus broke the wax seal and pulled out a single sheet of heavy parchment paper, written in Ethan’s familiar, elegant handwriting:

“If you are reading this together, it means my light didn't go out in vain. Marcus, protect Clara and my child—they are the best parts of me. Clara, trust my brother—he has a heart of iron, but he will give his life for those he loves. There is one final truth you must know about the night at the lake...”

Marcus and Clara read the next lines together, their eyes widening as the text revealed a final, staggering revelation that Ethan had taken to his grave.

“Silvio Cassano did not set the fire to kill me. He set the fire to cover up a swap. The body found in the lakeside cabin was not mine.”
