Chapter 13 - My marriage had other warning signs

Money was not the first form of control.

I saw that in therapy.

Wesley wanted:

My calendar.

My passwords? Not passwords, too strong. Let's use location.

My location enabled.

Joint calendars.

Approval before family dinners without him.

He said:

“Because your father’s people change plans constantly.”

Then clothes.

“Do you have to wear something that expensive to a casual dinner?”

Then work.

“You don’t need to be at every Renaldi meeting.”

Then pregnancy.

“Stop driving yourself.”

“Let my assistant arrange transportation.”

“Don’t stress over account statements.”

Each request could sound caring alone.

Together:

Less independence.

More dependence on systems he could see.

I had missed it because Wesley was never loud.

Until Bellafonte.

Control often becomes visible only after politeness stops working.
