Chapter 25 - Wesley’s mother calls me

Wesley’s mother had stayed almost entirely outside the case.
Her name:
Kathleen Kane.
She called after sentencing.
“I’m sorry.”
“For what?”
“For telling him marriage means you stop keeping score.”
Interesting.
“When?”
“Before your wedding.”
I sat quietly.
She continued:
“I meant emotionally. He heard financially.”
Not enough.
But useful.
“Did you know about the transfers?”
“No.”
“His company?”
“I knew he was struggling.”
Then:
“He hated feeling smaller beside your father.”
There.
Masculinity.
Status.
Debt.
My family’s wealth had become a mirror he resented.
Kathleen said:
“I should have told him asking for help isn’t humiliation.”
“Yes.”

She did not ask me to forgive him.
