Chapter 21 - Caius asks whether Dad wanted a different baby

Children find the emotional center adults avoid.
One night Caius asked:
“Did Dad not want our baby?”
I put down the laundry I was folding.
“No.”
“Then why switch?”
“He wanted people to think I was confused.”
“Why?”
“So he could argue that he should take care of you and your sister more.”
Caius frowned.
“He could just ask.”
I almost cried.
“Yes.”
“Would you say no?”
“To moving across the country right after she was born?”
“Yes.”
He nodded.
“So he didn’t ask because no.”
There.
A six-year-old summarized two months of litigation.
“He was afraid I would say no.”
Caius hugged his dinosaur.
“Sometimes no means no.”
May you like
“Yes.”
He knew that better than his father.
