Chapter 3 - Caius had watched from the hallway

A child specialist interviewed Caius later.
I was not allowed to sit there prompting him.
Good.
His account was simple.
He had gone to find Aloysius because he wanted help opening a snack.
He saw his father near two bassinets in the maternity hallway.
Exactly how Aloysius gained access to both became a separate hospital issue.
Caius said:
“Dad moved the pink blankets.”
Then:
“He took the bracelet.”
“What bracelet?”
“The baby foot one.”
Ankle band.
Then:
“He put one baby where the other baby was.”
The interviewer asked:
“What happened when Dad saw you?”
“He said go back.”
“And then?”
“I said I’m telling Mom.”
“What did he say?”
“Don’t.”
Then Caius followed him into my room.
Aloysius moved toward the bassinet.
Caius stood in front.
That was when Aloysius slapped him.
“Keep quiet. That baby is your sister now.”
Caius remembered the sentence exactly because it made no sense to him.
He already had a sister.

Why would Dad need to tell him which baby she was?
That confusion saved us.
