Nearly a year after the birth, the hospital held a private patient-safety review meeting with affected families.
Noeline was there.

Caius came because he wanted to see:
“The red scanner lady.”
Noeline laughed.
“That’s me.”
Caius asked:
“Do babies still get mixed?”
Noeline answered carefully.
“Hospitals work very hard to prevent that. What happened to your sister made us strengthen some of our checks.”
“Because Dad?”
“Because an adult did something unsafe and our system needed to be better at stopping it.”
Good answer.
No turning his father into a monster in front of him.
Then Caius said:
“You believed me.”
