Chapter 15 - Audrey’s part

Audrey had not falsified Oliver’s name.
But she was not entirely innocent.
The audit found two emails where she questioned benefit amounts.
One:
Mom, this is far above my annual cap. Are you sure this is okay?
Lenora:
I’m using Cormac’s unused continuation capacity.
Audrey:
Does he know?
Lenora:
He doesn’t need another grief conversation.
Audrey responded:
Fine. Just keep me out of the accounting.
That was bad.
She knew I did not know.
She chose not to ask.
Did she know Oliver’s identity was being used?
No evidence.
But she knew her benefits were being routed through my capacity without my knowledge.
The special committee required Audrey to:
Repay certain excess benefits she personally received.
Accept a reduction in future executive-family benefit eligibility.
Step aside from votes concerning investigation.
No criminal charge initially.
Prosecutors reviewed.
Her lawyer negotiated cooperation.
She admitted receiving benefits she knew were outside her normal allocation but denied knowledge of false identity coding.
Documents supported that distinction.
I was furious.
Still.
She was my sister.
She had let our mother use my grief as an excuse not to tell me.

That cost trust.
Not necessarily prison.
