Chapter 22 - The mixed verdict

The jury convicted Lenora of:
Falsifying business records.
Scheme to defraud based on selected reimbursement batches.
Improper use of a deceased dependent identity within company records.
They acquitted her of:
The broadest felony theft count seeking the entire $318,460.
Why?
Because prosecutors had not proved every underlying payment was unauthorized.
Some could have been approved legitimately for Lucas.
The jury also acquitted one tax-related false-statement count where accountants, not Lenora personally, prepared the filing.
Precise.
The court then entered the earlier misdemeanor hospital convictions.
Lenora did not look at me when the verdicts were read.
She looked at Audrey.
Then Lucas was not there.
