Chapter 18 - Lenora wins one argument

The civil accounting fight produced an uncomfortable result.
Lenora claimed the company owed her for:
$74,000
in personal funds she had advanced for legitimate Lucas expenses before the false coding began.
Receipts showed:
She had.
The company had promised reimbursement under an earlier board-approved family relocation program.
Those amounts were never paid.
My first reaction:
“Offset it against what she stole.”
The lawyers said:
Eventually, perhaps.
But first determine valid debt.
The independent committee confirmed:
$51,800
of her claim was legitimate after exclusions.
The company owed her.
That did not erase fraud.
It meant a dishonest person could still be correct about a separate accounting issue.
We recognized the payable.
Then offset it later against civil recovery where permitted.

I hated how fair that felt.
Fairness is often unpleasant when you want moral simplicity.
