Chapter 19 - The hospital case goes first

The hospital-related misdemeanor case was tried before the financial case.

Nurse Kelly testified.

Hospital safety officer testified.

Etta did not testify live.

Her age, prior statements, and corroborating adults made prosecutors avoid unnecessary courtroom exposure.

Lenora testified.

“I was encouraging my granddaughter to stand.”

“Why?”

“She had been lying down all day.”

“She had surgery.”

“Children recover faster when adults don’t coddle them.”

“Did a nurse tell you not to move her without assistance?”

“I don’t remember.”

Kelly remembered.

Then the statement:

“My grandson wants the bed by the window.”

Lenora said:

“A joke.”

What about boys matter more?

“She misunderstood.”

Lucas’s statement that he refused the bed?

Defense objected to overuse.

The court allowed limited evidence through proper channels.

The judge found Lenora guilty of:

Misdemeanor child endangerment.

Simple assault.

Sentencing deferred until financial case concluded so total consequences could be considered.
