Chapter 8 - The phrase replacement dependent

The worst document came from Lenora’s executive assistant.

She turned it over voluntarily after the board opened an internal investigation.

A handwritten note.

Lenora’s writing.

OM continuation. Lucas as replacement dependent for family-benefit purposes. Do not move to Audrey cap. Cormac will object emotionally.

Replacement dependent.

I read it three times.

Not legal terminology.

Not accounting terminology.

Her terminology.

Then an email to the assistant:

Use Oliver’s legacy slot until Lucas is sixteen. Boys need continuity in this family, and Audrey’s allocation is already exhausted.

Audrey’s allocation.

Her executive family-benefit cap had been used for legitimate childcare and education connected to her frequent relocations.

Instead of asking the board to increase it, Lenora put Lucas into Oliver’s dead profile.

Why sixteen?

No one knew.

Then another message:

Etta’s ordinary expenses remain Cormac’s responsibility. Do not add her to the continuation bucket.

There.

Gender preference built into accounting.

Not because Etta lacked benefits.

She was my current dependent and had ordinary coverage.

But Lenora created an extra stream for Lucas using my dead son.

Then the hospital threat made sense.

Choose that spoiled girl again and your son gets nothing from me.

In her mind:

Oliver’s slot.

Lucas’s money.

One male line folded into another.

She had not forgotten Oliver died.

She had converted his administrative identity into a mechanism.
